BMW 135i Gets Single-Turbo Engine, Twin-Clutch Gearbox

Like its 3 Series brethren, the 2010 135i is receiving BMW's single-turbo I-6 and twin-clutch transmission. The engine, known internally as the N55, makes 300-hp and 300 lb.-ft. of torque, the latter from 1200 rpm to 5000 rpm. BMW attributes the broad powerband to the combination of direct fuel injection and variable valve management with turbocharging.

BMW claims this year's 135i, when fitted with a double-clutch transmission (DCT), will reach 60 mph in 5.0 seconds, while the convertible takes 0.3 seconds longer. The last six-speed 135i we tested did it in 4.7 seconds, so we're thinking BMW is being conservative.

BMW's DCT decreases shift time while improving fuel economy by 1 or 2 mpg. The DCT replaces the automatic in the 1 Series lineup, but the conventional six-speed manual remains an option. BMW's updated the box with dry sump lubrication, reducing friction loss.

The DCT-equipped 135i is slated to hit BMW showrooms this March, though pricing has not been announced.
